About our men's watches

Our men's watches collection brings together automatic, hand-wound and quartz watches in dive, pilot, dress, chronograph and everyday styles.

Sizes run from compact 36mm cases to large dive watches.

Each product page lists the movement and the key specs, so you can compare watches on what's inside, not only on how they look.

Brands and styles in the range

San Martin makes up a large part of the collection, with automatic dive, pilot and dress watches.

Look at the SN0017 and SN0142 200m divers, the 38.5mm SN0108 pilot watch and the slim 37mm SN0110 dress watch.

Pagani Design covers everyday automatics such as the PD-1639 and PD-1688 V3, both with Miyota 8215 movements, plus the PD-1662 GMT and quartz chronographs.

Berny offers lightweight titanium watches, a PT5000 automatic and a 200m diver with a Miyota 8205, alongside slim quartz dress and chronograph watches.

Sea-Gull brings dive, skeleton and dual-time automatics. For something rarer, the AGELOCER flying tourbillon and the Sugess 38mm hand-wound tourbillon show fine watchmaking up close.

You'll also find hand-wound dress watches from Pierre Philippe and Farasute, and automatics from Baltany, Bonest Gatti, Heimdallr, Yelang and Addiesdive.

What to consider when choosing a men's watch

Case size. The average men's wrist is about 17.6cm, according to US Army ANSUR II body measurement data. On a wrist that size, 38mm to 42mm suits most styles.

Slimmer wrists, or anyone after a classic look, should try 36mm to 39mm.

Also check lug-to-lug, the distance from the top lugs to the bottom lugs. If it's longer than your wrist is wide, the watch will overhang.

Our watch size guide shows how to measure.

Movement. The movement (or calibre) is the engine of the watch:

  • Automatic: a rotor winds the mainspring as your wrist moves. No battery.
  • Hand-wound: you wind it through the crown, usually once a day. Often slimmer.
  • Quartz: battery-powered, highly accurate and low maintenance.

Mechaquartz movements, such as the Seiko VK63 and VK64 in some of our chronographs and the VH31 in the San Martin 36mm pilot, are quartz.

They run on a battery but add a mechanical feel to the chronograph or a smooth sweeping seconds hand.

Water resistance. The rating comes from a pressure test, not a safe diving depth.

30m (3ATM) handles rain and hand washing. 100m (10ATM) is fine for swimming. For snorkelling and diving, choose 200m with a screw-down crown.

Crystal. Sapphire crystal resists scratches far better than mineral glass, and most of the automatics here have it.

Some quartz models use Hardlex (a hardened mineral glass) or "sapphire-coated" glass, which is mineral glass with a thin coating, not solid sapphire.

Shop men's watches by style

  • Dive watches: 200m divers with rotating bezels and screw-down crowns, such as the San Martin SN0046 and the Berny Miyota 8205 diver.
  • Chronograph watches: stopwatch functions in quartz and in hand-wound mechanical form, like the Sugess ST1908.
  • Dress watches: slim cases and leather straps for work and weddings, like the San Martin SN0110.
  • Automatic watches: self-winding watches with Seiko, Miyota and Sea-Gull movements.
  • Mechanical watches: automatic and hand-wound together, from everyday pieces to tourbillons.
  • Brand pages: San Martin and Berny.

Looking after your watch

An automatic stops once its power reserve runs out, usually after a day or two off the wrist. Wind it a few turns and reset the time.

If you rotate several watches, an automatic watch winder keeps them running.

Keep watches away from strong magnets, such as speakers and phone cases, and out of hot showers and saunas. Rinse in fresh water after a swim in the sea.

Mechanical watches benefit from a service every few years. Quartz watches need a new battery every few years, and a watchmaker can check the seals at the same time.

Frequently asked questions

What size watch should a man wear?

Most men's wrists suit a 38mm to 42mm case. If your wrist is under about 17cm, try 36mm to 40mm. Check lug-to-lug too: the watch shouldn't overhang the edges of your wrist. Our watch size guide shows how to measure.

Should I buy an automatic or a quartz watch?

Choose automatic if you enjoy mechanical watchmaking and wear a watch most days, as it winds itself and needs no battery. Choose quartz for the best accuracy, a lighter price and almost no upkeep beyond a battery every few years.

What water resistance do I need for swimming?

At least 100m (10ATM), with the crown pushed fully in. For snorkelling and diving, choose 200m with a screw-down crown. A 30m or 50m rating covers rain and hand washing, not swimming.

Is sapphire crystal worth it?

Yes, for a watch you'll wear every day. Sapphire is far more scratch resistant than mineral or Hardlex glass. Note that "sapphire-coated" glass is mineral glass with a coating, not solid sapphire.

Are mechaquartz chronographs mechanical?

No. Mechaquartz movements such as the Seiko VK63 and VK64 are quartz and run on a battery. They use a mechanical module for the chronograph, which gives the pushers and hands a mechanical feel.

Can I return a watch if the size isn't right?

Yes. We accept returns within 30 days on unworn watches in their original packaging. See our returns policy for details.
