Opal earrings, cut and made by us

We source our opals directly from Australian miners, then select and cut each stone ourselves. Our owner designs and makes every pair.

Because no two opals are alike, no two pairs are quite the same.

All three pairs are solid opal: opal all the way through, rather than a doublet, which is a thin slice of opal bonded to a backing.

Each pair is set in s925 sterling silver (92.5% silver).

Studs or drops?

Studs sit neatly on the earlobe. They suit everyday wear and pair easily with other jewellery.

Drops hang below the lobe and move as you do, so the opal catches more light. They're a natural choice for evenings and occasions.

Our opal earrings

Coober Pedy solid opal drop earrings. A two-tier design: a small oval opal stud, with a teardrop opal hanging below. The white-based opal flashes blue, green and soft pink.

Lambina solid opal studs. Oval cabochons, smooth domed stones with no facets, held in four prongs. Expect greens, oranges, lilac-blue and soft gold.

Lightning Ridge solid opal triangle studs. A modern geometric shape, with a dark-bodied opal that shifts between deep blue and vibrant teal.

The drop earrings and the triangle studs both have post-back closures.

Stone size and colour

Our studs are small and neat: the triangles measure about 4.2 x 5.4mm, and the Lambina ovals about 6.9 x 3.8mm.

The teardrop opals on the drop earrings are about 12 to 13mm long, with a smaller oval above each.

Colour depends partly on body tone, the opal's background colour, graded from N1 (darkest) to N9 (lightest).

Our Lightning Ridge studs are N2, which makes their blues look deep and saturated. The Coober Pedy and Lambina opals are white-based N8, with a softer, pastel glow.

Carat weight isn't the whole story. Body tone, brightness and pattern all shape an opal's value, so a small, dark stone can be worth more than a larger white one.

Wearing and caring for opal earrings

Earrings take fewer knocks than rings, so they're one of the easiest ways to wear opal every day.

  • Put them on last, after perfume, hairspray and make-up, to keep harsh chemicals off the opal.
  • Take them off to swim, shower or sleep.
  • Avoid sudden temperature changes, such as hot water followed by cold.
  • Store each pair separately, so harder stones and metal can't scratch the opal.

Frequently asked questions

Are your opal earrings solid opal?

Yes. All three pairs are solid opal, cut from a single piece rather than a thin slice on a backing. Each listing names the field: Lightning Ridge, Coober Pedy or Lambina.

What's the difference between stud and drop earrings?

Studs sit on the earlobe. Drops hang below it and move as you move. Our drop earrings combine both: a small opal stud with a teardrop opal below.

What metal are your opal earrings?

All three pairs are set in s925 sterling silver, which is 92.5% silver. Sterling silver darkens over time; a silver polishing cloth brings back the shine.

What do N2 and N8 mean on a listing?

They're body tone grades, describing the opal's background colour from N1 (darkest) to N9 (lightest). Our Lightning Ridge studs are N2; our other earrings are N8.

Can I wear opal earrings every day?

Yes. Earrings take few knocks, so they suit daily wear. Put them on after perfume and hairspray, and take them off to swim, shower or sleep.

How do I clean opal earrings?

Wipe them with a soft, damp cloth and dry them gently. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners, silver dips and harsh chemicals. Polish the silver with a silver cloth, avoiding the stone.
