Opal Necklaces

Opal pendant necklaces in sterling silver, set with solid and doublet Australian opal from Lightning Ridge and Coober Pedy.

Opal necklaces, ready to wear

Every piece here is a pendant necklace: an opal pendant designed to hang from a chain, and most come with one.

We source our opals directly from Australian miners, then select and cut each stone ourselves. Our owner designs and makes each necklace around its opal.

Chain and length

Most of our opal necklaces come with a sterling silver chain. Check each listing for the chain details before you order.

Where we list a length, it's 45cm. That usually sits around the collarbone, just below the base of the neck.

A 45cm chain works with crew necks, open collars and V-necks, and leaves room to layer a longer chain beneath it.

Larger stones hang best on a sturdier chain. Our 3.0ct Lightning Ridge pendant comes on a woven 2mm sterling silver chain.

Choose by the look of the opal

White Coober Pedy opal. A soft, milky base with pastel flashes, graded N8 on the body tone scale from N1 (darkest) to N9 (lightest).

Choose a double drop, a classic four-prong setting, a pastel stone in an organic frame, or a 7.95ct free-form opal.

Crystal opal. Translucent, so the colour seems to glow from within. Our 2.75ct Coober Pedy crystal opal shows a red sunflash, a broad flash of red as it turns.

Our 1.20ct Coober Pedy crystal opal flashes neon green and electric blue.

Grey-based Lightning Ridge opal. The opal in our 3.0ct pendant comes from the Dead Dog Gully diggings, with striated and mackerel-like patterns in blue, green, magenta and orange.

Doublet designs. Lightning Ridge doublet opal set into sterling silver koala, kangaroo, baby seal and ocean-inspired designs. Our opal pendants page covers them in more detail.

Solid opal or doublet?

A solid opal is opal all the way through, cut from one piece. Our solid necklaces include the double drop, the 2.75ct four-prong pendant and the 1.20ct crystal opal.

A doublet is a thin slice of precious opal bonded to a dark backing, which deepens the colour. Every doublet necklace says "doublet" in its title.

Doublets need a little extra care: don't soak them, as long soaking can weaken the bond.

Lab-grown diamond accents

Several of our necklaces add lab-grown diamonds: real diamonds, grown above ground rather than mined.

  • The 2.75ct Coober Pedy crystal opal, accented with eight lab-grown diamonds.
  • The 7.95ct free-form opal, with a single round-cut lab-grown diamond.
  • The 1.20ct crystal opal, with one lab-grown diamond set above the stone.
  • The 3.0ct Lightning Ridge opal, framed by lab-grown diamonds totalling 1.3ct.

Wearing and caring for your necklace

A necklace takes far fewer knocks than a ring, so it's an easy way to wear opal every day.

  • Put it on last, after perfume, sunscreen and moisturiser, to keep harsh chemicals off the opal.
  • Take it off to swim, shower or sleep.
  • Avoid sudden temperature changes, such as hot water followed by cold.
  • Store it on its own, clasp fastened, so the chain doesn't tangle and nothing scratches the opal.

Sterling silver darkens over time. A silver polishing cloth brings it back; avoid silver dips, which aren't safe for opal.

Frequently asked questions

Do your opal necklaces come with a chain?

Most do, in sterling silver. Check each listing for the chain details before you order.

How long are the chains?

Where we list a length, it's 45cm, which sits around the collarbone. If a listing doesn't give a length, ask us before you order.

What's the difference between an opal necklace and an opal pendant?

A pendant is the opal in its setting; a necklace is the pendant with its chain. Our 9ct gold pendant is sold on its own; find it with our opal pendants.

Are the opals solid or doublet?

Both. Our koala, kangaroo, baby seal and ocean-inspired designs use Lightning Ridge doublets, and say so in the title. Pieces titled solid opal are opal all the way through.

Can I wear an opal necklace every day?

Yes. Necklaces take few knocks. Put yours on after perfume and sunscreen, take it off to swim or shower, and never soak a doublet.

Are the diamonds real?

Yes. They're lab-grown diamonds: real diamonds, grown above ground rather than mined. Several of our necklaces feature them.
